M. Wali Ullah is a maritime claims professional and lawyer with nearly thirteen years of combined experience in the road and maritime transport sectors, including more than a decade dedicated exclusively to maritime claims handling in Bangladesh. He has been associated with Assurance Maritime Bangladesh Limited since 2012 and has progressed within the firm to the position of Claims Associate.

His practice is focused on the practical handling of marine insurance and liability claims arising from vessel operations in Bangladeshi ports and waters. Working closely with senior legal and claims colleagues, he supports the international shipping community through disciplined claims management, operational coordination and effective engagement with local stakeholders.

Experience

Mr Ullah’s experience encompasses the handling of a wide range of P&I, FD&D and marine liability matters arising during the operational life of vessels trading to Bangladesh. He has been involved in numerous claims relating to cargo shortage and damage, ship collisions and allisions, jetty damage and fixed or floating object (FFO) incidents, stowaways, crew injury, illness and fatality cases, as well as customs penalties and regulatory fines.

He has substantial exposure to Freight, Demurrage and Defence (FD&D) matters, particularly disputes concerning bunker quality and quantity and the recovery of unpaid bunker debts. His role frequently involves coordinating factual investigations, liaising with shipboard personnel, agents, surveyors and other technical parties, and supporting liability assessment and resolution strategy.

Mr Ullah has experience managing maritime claims from their emergence through to conclusion, whether by amicable settlement or through litigation support. He regularly coordinates with clients and their lawyers across jurisdictions, monitoring proceedings from initial stage to completion and ensuring that local developments in Bangladesh align with broader dispute-resolution objectives.

He has also worked on rare and sensitive casualty scenarios requiring liaison with foreign embassies, law-enforcement agencies, hospital authorities and local agents, including cases involving unidentified human remains found on board vessels. In such matters, his practical coordination has assisted vessels in avoiding detention and minimising operational disruption.

Through sustained engagement across the maritime sector, he has developed an extensive local network, enabling effective mobilisation of resources and connections across ports, terminals and regulatory bodies in Bangladesh.
